Algeria Cuts Diplomatic Ties With UAE Amid Growing Regional Tensions
Algeria has announced that it is severing diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, marking a major deterioration in ties between the two countries. The decision was announced by Algeria’s Foreign Ministry on September

Algiers accused Abu Dhabi of engaging in what it described as “provocative or hostile” actions. Algerian authorities said they had exhausted available efforts to preserve bilateral relations before taking the decision to formally break diplomatic ties.
As part of the move, Algeria is also set to restrict UAE-registered civilian and military aircraft from using its airspace. Commercial flights are reportedly being given an exemption until the end of 2026 under existing arrangements.
Algeria has also summoned the UAE ambassador and given him 48 hours to leave the country. The UAE, meanwhile, has expressed hope that the diplomatic rupture will be temporary and stressed the importance of maintaining ties between the two peoples.
Relations between Algeria and the UAE had already become increasingly strained over several regional issues, including differing positions on Israel, Western Sahara and developments in the Sahel. Algeria supports the Polisario Front in the Western Sahara dispute, while the UAE has backed Morocco’s position.
The diplomatic break adds another significant layer of tension to an already complex political landscape in North Africa and the wider Middle East. Its impact on aviation, trade and regional diplomacy will now be closely watched.
