Democratic Republic of Congo: School Fire in Bukavu Kills at Least 24 Students
A devastating fire swept through two schools in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, on September 10, killing at least 24 students and injuring dozens of others. The incident occurred in a densely populated part of the city, which is controlled by the AFC/M23 rebel movement.

The victims included 19 girls and five boys, according to the rebel administration that controls Bukavu. Local authorities said 29 people were receiving medical treatment, with several reportedly in critical condition.
The fire destroyed two schools along with roughly 300 wooden homes in the surrounding area. Witnesses described chaotic scenes as students attempted to escape while emergency workers transported victims to nearby medical facilities.
According to local officials cited by the Associated Press, the blaze began at a nearby house before spreading rapidly to the adjoining schools. Some students were reportedly trapped inside one of the school buildings.
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation. Authorities and health workers have warned that the death toll could increase as rescue and identification efforts continue.
The tragedy has added to the difficulties facing civilians in eastern Congo, a region already affected by armed conflict and serious humanitarian challenges.
