Seven Charged With Manslaughter in Melbourne Fatal Stabbing Case After Nearly Two Years
MELBOURNE, Australia: Australian police have charged seven people with manslaughter in connection with the fatal stabbing of 24-year-old Lino Atem in Melbourne’s south-west, marking a significant development in an investigation that has remained open since January 2025.

The accused include three 17-year-old boys and four adult men aged between 18 and 21. Police arrested the seven individuals during coordinated operations across several Melbourne suburbs on October 21, 2026.
Fatal Attack at Wyndham Vale Park
The incident occurred late on January 10, 2025, when Atem was spending time with friends at a reserve on Haines Drive in Wyndham Vale.
According to investigators, a group of people allegedly approached the gathering and an altercation followed. Atem suffered multiple stab wounds and died at the scene. Two other men were injured during the incident and required hospital treatment.
Investigators have previously considered whether the attack may have involved mistaken identity, although the circumstances remain subject to the legal process.
Major Police Operation Leads to Charges
The arrests followed an extensive investigation involving Victoria Police’s Homicide Squad and other specialist units.
In March 2025, detectives conducted searches at 15 properties and arrested 13 people for questioning. Those individuals were released while investigators continued examining the evidence.
The latest operation resulted in seven people being charged. Police have indicated that the investigation remains active and that additional suspects have not been ruled out.
Forensic Evidence Presented in Court
During court proceedings, prosecutors discussed forensic evidence recovered during the investigation, including DNA evidence associated with a machete found at the scene.
Investigators are also examining CCTV footage, clothing and other material that may help establish the circumstances of the attack and the alleged involvement of the accused.
The evidence will be assessed through the judicial process, and the charges do not constitute a finding of guilt.
Family Still Seeking Justice
The case has brought renewed attention to the loss suffered by Atem’s family. His brother, Atem Atem, was fatally shot in Wyndham Vale in February 2023.
Police have stated that there is currently no evidence linking the two deaths.
The family has continued to seek justice for Lino, whose death has had a lasting impact on those close to him.
Court Proceedings to Continue
The four adult defendants were expected to appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court, while the three teenagers were scheduled to appear before a children’s court.
Some of the accused teenagers are expected to seek bail, and further hearings will determine how the proceedings advance.
The case represents a major development in Melbourne’s ongoing homicide investigation, although the legal process must establish the individual responsibility of each accused person.
