South Korea’s Exports Surge 93.7% as Global AI Boom Drives Semiconductor Demand
SEOUL, South Korea — November 1, 2026
South Korea has recorded a remarkable increase in exports, with overseas shipments rising 93.7% year-on-year in October to reach a record $115.28 billion. The sharp growth was largely driven by surging global demand for semiconductors and the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

According to trade data released by South Korea’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources on Sunday, semiconductor exports climbed 259.4% compared with October last year, reaching approximately $56.44 billion. The performance highlights the country’s growing importance in the global technology supply chain.
The expansion of AI services has encouraged major technology companies worldwide to invest heavily in data centres, advanced computing systems and high-performance servers. These developments have increased demand for memory chips and other semiconductor products manufactured by South Korean companies.
Computer exports also recorded exceptional growth, increasing 496.6% year-on-year as demand for AI servers and related equipment continued to rise. Automobile exports grew by 18.1%, while petroleum product shipments increased by 80%.
South Korea’s export performance strengthened across several major markets. Shipments to China increased 133.6%, while exports to the United States rose 185.8%. Exports to Southeast Asia and the European Union also registered substantial gains.
The country’s total exports for the first ten months of 2026 reached approximately $930 billion. This has brought South Korea closer to achieving an annual export milestone of $1 trillion for the first time in its history.
However, the impressive figures also require careful interpretation. October had more working days than the same month last year because of differences in the timing of the Chuseok holiday. After adjusting for working-day differences, export growth was lower, although it remained exceptionally strong at 76.1%.
Imports also increased significantly, rising 36% year-on-year to $72.78 billion. Despite the increase, South Korea recorded a monthly trade surplus of approximately $42.5 billion.
The export boom is providing considerable support to the country’s manufacturing sector and economic growth. Major semiconductor manufacturers, including Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, are benefiting from strong demand and continued investment in AI-related technologies.
Nevertheless, the benefits may not be distributed evenly throughout the economy. Strong export figures do not automatically translate into higher household spending or improved conditions for every business. Small and medium-sized companies continue to face challenges related to international competition, supply chains and changing global trade conditions.
South Korea’s latest trade performance demonstrates how artificial intelligence is reshaping international commerce. With semiconductor demand remaining strong, the country’s export sector is entering the final months of 2026 with significant momentum.
