France Opens Attempted Murder Investigation After Petrol Bomb Attack on Police During Paris Protests
Paris, November 2, 2026: France has launched a serious criminal investigation following violent clashes between protesters and security forces in Paris, where a petrol bomb was thrown at police officers during demonstrations over rising living costs and economic inequality.

The incident occurred on Saturday, October 31, when hundreds of thousands of people participated in nationwide demonstrations demanding better living conditions, improved public services and greater economic support.
Petrol Bomb Attack Injures Police Officer
The most alarming incident took place in eastern Paris, where demonstrators allegedly threw an improvised incendiary device towards security personnel.
Dramatic footage showed a firebomb exploding near a police officer, setting part of his protective uniform on fire. Other officers immediately rushed to extinguish the flames and assist their colleague.
Initial medical assessments reported second-degree burns among the injuries.
French prosecutors subsequently opened an investigation into attempted murder of public officials.
Hundreds of Thousands Join Nationwide Demonstrations
According to French authorities, approximately 320,000 people participated in demonstrations across the country.
The protests marked the third consecutive weekend of public demonstrations against rising living costs, deteriorating public services and economic inequality.
Although most gatherings remained peaceful, clashes broke out in Paris and several other cities as some groups confronted security personnel.
More Than 770 People Arrested
French authorities reported more than 770 arrests during the weekend’s protests and related incidents.
Security forces were deployed in large numbers to prevent further violence, protect public infrastructure and maintain order.
However, prosecutors said that no suspects had initially been arrested specifically in connection with the petrol bomb attack.
Investigators are examining photographs and video footage to identify those responsible.
Government Condemns Growing Violence
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez strongly criticised the attacks against police officers, describing the violence committed by certain groups as extraordinary.
Authorities have emphasised that peaceful demonstrations are a democratic right, but attacks involving explosive or incendiary devices will face serious legal consequences.
Student Demonstrations Could Continue
The protests have also attracted significant participation from high school and university students.
Student organisations have announced further plans for school and university blockades, arguing that government proposals have failed to adequately address their concerns.
Their demands include better educational facilities, improved access to higher education, affordable living conditions and stronger public services.
France Faces Another Week of Uncertainty
The latest unrest presents a significant challenge for French authorities as demonstrations continue to highlight public dissatisfaction with economic conditions.
With further student actions and union-led demonstrations expected, police and government officials are preparing for additional security challenges.
The investigation into the petrol bomb attack remains ongoing, while authorities continue working to identify those responsible and establish the full circumstances surrounding the violence.
