UN Chief Condemns Escalation in Syria, Urges Respect for Sovereignty and Civilian Protection

United Nations, July 2025 – United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced deep concern over the intensifying violence in Syria, calling for immediate measures to halt further escalation and protect civilian lives. In a strongly worded statement shared publicly, Guterres emphasized that all forms of violence targeting civilians are unacceptable and must cease without delay.
“I’m alarmed by continued escalation of violence in Syria and unequivocally condemn all violence against civilians,” the Secretary-General declared, underscoring the urgent need for restraint and accountability. He specifically condemned recent Israeli airstrikes and reports of Israel Defense Forces (IDF) redeployment in the Golan Heights, warning that such military actions further destabilize the region and pose grave risks to regional peace.
Guterres stressed the critical importance of upholding Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. “I call for an immediate cessation of all violations,” he urged, referring to both external interventions and internal clashes that continue to plague the war-torn nation.
At the core of the UN chief’s message is a renewed plea for a political solution to the Syrian conflict. Highlighting the long-standing need for governance reform, he reiterated that the only path to lasting peace lies in supporting a “credible, orderly, and inclusive political transition” in Syria—one that reflects the will and rights of the Syrian people.
The situation in Syria remains precarious, with over a decade of civil conflict having displaced millions and left essential infrastructure in ruins. With ongoing international tensions and renewed hostilities, Guterres’ message serves as a reminder that diplomatic engagement and adherence to international law are essential to breaking the cycle of violence.
The UN continues to advocate for peace, dialogue, and humanitarian aid access, urging the global community to rally behind efforts that prioritize human dignity and stability in Syria.
