India has taken a significant step in the global landscape of Artificial Intelligence (AI) by committing to ethical AI development through the IndiaAI Mission. As part of this initiative, eight groundbreaking projects have been selected under the Safe and Trusted AI Pillar to promote responsible AI across various critical themes. This move aligns with India’s broader vision to foster technological self-reliance and ethical AI practices, ensuring that the advancement of AI technologies occurs in a responsible, transparent, and privacy-preserving manner.

The IndiaAI Mission: A Pathway to Ethical AI

IndiaAI, a dedicated business division under the Digital India Corporation of the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY), is at the forefront of democratizing AI benefits across all levels of society. The mission not only aims to bolster India’s position as a global leader in AI but also focuses on promoting inclusive growth through technological advancements.

Recognizing the challenges AI poses, such as biases in datasets and privacy concerns, the mission has prioritized the development of indigenous tools, frameworks, and guidelines tailored to the country’s unique needs. To support this, the IndiaAI Mission issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to seek proposals for responsible AI projects. Out of over 2000 proposals submitted by academic institutions, start-ups, research organizations, and civil society, eight key projects were selected to address pressing issues such as AI bias, privacy, explainability, and ethical governance.

The Selected Projects: A Closer Look

The eight projects selected under the IndiaAI Mission are focused on diverse themes that emphasize AI ethics and governance:

1. Machine Unlearning: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur will work on machine unlearning in generative models, aiming to enhance AI systems’ ability to forget certain data, thereby improving privacy and security.

2. Synthetic Data Generation: IIT Roorkee’s project will focus on generating synthetic data and mitigating bias within machine learning pipelines, ensuring that AI systems operate fairly and without discriminatory patterns.

3. AI Bias Mitigation: The National Institute of Technology (NIT) Raipur will address bias in healthcare AI systems, creating strategies to reduce unfair outcomes and improve accuracy in medical AI applications.

4. Explainable AI: The Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune, in collaboration with Mindgraph Technology Pvt. Ltd., will develop explainable AI models that prioritize privacy and security, especially for defense and security applications.

5. Privacy Enhancing Tools: IIT Delhi, in collaboration with other institutions, will work on robust privacy-preserving machine learning models, addressing concerns about data leaks and unauthorized access to sensitive information.

6. AI Ethical Certification: Indraprastha Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Delhi, alongside the Telecommunication Engineering Center (TEC), will develop “Nishpaksh,” a tool that assesses the fairness of AI models, ensuring that AI systems remain impartial.

7. AI Algorithm Auditing: Civic Data Labs will create ParakhAI, an open-source toolkit for participatory algorithmic auditing, enabling stakeholders to evaluate AI algorithms transparently.

8. AI Governance Testing: Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, in partnership with TEC, will design a framework for transparency, risk assessment, and knowledge testing of large language models (LLMs), ensuring responsible governance of AI systems.

Fostering Ethical AI: India’s Commitment to a Secure Future

India’s dedication to ethical AI development is reflected in these projects, which cover essential themes like machine unlearning, bias mitigation, privacy preservation, and algorithm auditing. This approach ensures that AI technologies used across sectors such as healthcare, security, and governance are transparent, explainable, and accountable.

The IndiaAI Mission is committed to fostering innovation while adhering to ethical principles, ensuring that AI systems benefit society without compromising individual rights and privacy. By investing in these projects, India is laying the groundwork for a future where AI serves as a tool for inclusive growth, fairness, and technological self-reliance.

This initiative underscores India’s role as a leader in the responsible use of AI, shaping global standards and contributing to the ethical development of AI technologies. The IndiaAI Mission’s efforts represent a significant milestone in harnessing AI for the benefit of all, ensuring that the technology is used in ways that align with India’s unique societal needs and values.
