Cabinet Clears Small Hydro Power Scheme to Boost Green Energy in Hilly and Northeastern Regions
In a major push toward clean and sustainable energy, the Union Cabinet of India has approved the Small Hydro Power (SHP) Development Scheme for the period FY 2026–27 to FY 2030–31. The initiative is designed to promote eco-friendly power generation and strengthen energy access in regions with untapped hydro potential.
The scheme focuses on supporting small hydro projects with capacities ranging from 1 to 25 megawatts. These projects are particularly suited for geographically challenging areas, especially in hilly terrains and the Northeastern states, where large-scale infrastructure development is often difficult.
Officials highlighted that the initiative will play a key role in accelerating India’s transition toward renewable energy. By utilizing natural water resources in a sustainable manner, small hydro projects can generate electricity with minimal environmental impact compared to conventional energy sources.
The scheme is expected to provide multiple benefits, including improved local power supply, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, and enhanced economic opportunities in remote regions. It will also encourage investment in decentralized energy systems, helping bridge gaps in electricity access.
The involvement of the Ministry of Jal Shakti is seen as crucial in ensuring effective implementation, particularly in managing water resources and coordinating project development.
