Cold Front Set to Bring Heavy Rain Across Central and Northern Europe
August 22, 2026
A developing low-pressure system is expected to bring a period of heavy and persistent rainfall across parts of Central and Northern Europe as a cold front advances into a warmer air mass.

Weather data shared by Ventusky show the system developing along the frontal boundary, with the area of heaviest precipitation stretching from Czechia through Poland toward the Baltic region. The forecast indicates rainfall totals of around 70 mm in Czechia and southern Poland, while some locations in northern Poland and the Baltic states could receive up to 100 mm.
Low-Pressure System Strengthens
The weather pattern is being driven by the interaction between colder air moving into warmer air ahead of the front. Such a setup can encourage the development or strengthening of low pressure and produce prolonged bands of rainfall.
The forecast map shows a northeastward-oriented zone of precipitation extending across several countries. Parts of Czechia and Poland are positioned along the main corridor, while heavier rainfall is also projected toward the Baltic region.
Weather services in Poland are also warning of periods of intense rain and thunderstorms. A forecast issued for August 21-22 indicated that some areas could experience heavy rainfall, with stronger winds and locally severe thunderstorms.
Poland Among the Areas Facing Heavier Rain
Poland is expected to experience particularly unsettled conditions as the system moves across the region.
Local forecasts indicate that some areas could receive 40-60 mm of rain, with isolated totals reaching around 70 mm. Strong thunderstorms may also produce wind gusts of up to 80 km/h in affected areas.
The combination of prolonged rainfall and thunderstorms could temporarily increase the risk of water accumulation, difficult driving conditions and localized flooding in vulnerable locations.
Baltic Region Also in the Rainfall Zone
The weather system is forecast to continue northeastward toward the Baltic states. The Ventusky projection indicates that some parts of the region could receive rainfall totals approaching 100 mm.
The Baltic area is also expected to experience unsettled conditions over the weekend. Meteorological forecasts for northern Poland and the Baltic coast point to continued showers, thunderstorms and periods of stronger winds as low pressure and associated fronts remain active.
Cooler Air Follows the Front
The passage of the front will also change the character of the weather. As colder air advances behind the system, temperatures are expected to become more moderate across parts of Central and Eastern Europe.
The transition from warmer air to cooler conditions can also contribute to increased atmospheric instability around the frontal boundary, particularly where sufficient moisture remains available.
Recent European weather patterns have already produced significant contrasts between warmer and cooler air masses across Central and Eastern Europe.
Weather Situation Requires Monitoring
The exact location and intensity of the heaviest rainfall can change as the low-pressure system develops and moves northeastward. Forecast maps should therefore be interpreted as projections rather than guarantees for individual locations.
For residents in affected areas, the most important concerns are prolonged heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong wind gusts and locally poor travel conditions.
The latest forecast picture suggests that the weather system will remain an important feature across Central and Northern Europe as the cold front progresses toward the Baltic region.
