FBI-Led Operation Tempest Targets High-Risk Offenders in Northern New Mexico
Northern New Mexico, A coordinated federal, state, tribal and local law-enforcement operation in northern New Mexico has resulted in federal charges against individuals accused of involvement in violent crime, illegal firearms activity and narcotics trafficking.
The operation, known as Operation Tempest, was developed to focus law-enforcement resources on some of the offenders considered the most serious threats to communities in Rio Arriba County and surrounding areas.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, the operation targeted 10 individuals identified through cooperation between tribal and local law-enforcement agencies. Investigators said the effort was prompted by concerns involving violence, firearms violations and drug trafficking, including activity associated with criminal networks.
The operation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and involved a broad group of federal, state, county and tribal agencies. Participating organizations included the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, Homeland Security Investigations, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, New Mexico State Police, the New Mexico National Guard and several local and tribal police departments.
Federal prosecutors said the operation grew from discussions among law-enforcement leaders that began in September 2025. During those discussions, officials identified violent offenders, firearms violations and narcotics activity as significant public-safety concerns in northern New Mexico.
Authorities described Operation Tempest as the first in a planned series of coordinated enforcement efforts across New Mexico. Future operations are expected to focus on identifying individuals believed to be driving serious violence and other criminal activity in local communities.
The cases are being investigated by the FBI’s Santa Fe Resident Agency in cooperation with participating law-enforcement agencies. Federal prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico are handling the resulting cases.
The Justice Department said the operation demonstrates the role of interagency cooperation in addressing serious crime. By combining federal investigative resources with information and support from tribal, state and local authorities, officials aim to pursue offenders accused of posing significant risks to public safety.
Authorities have scheduled sentencing in at least one of the cases for September 10, 2026. Court proceedings will determine the individual outcomes of the cases.
The allegations described in criminal charges are accusations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
