Athens Challenges Ankara Over Maritime Claims and Marine Parks
ATHENS: Greece has lodged a formal diplomatic protest with Turkey following recent Turkish statements concerning Greek regulatory measures in the Aegean Sea and Turkey’s declaration of two marine parks.
Greek diplomatic sources said the protest was delivered to the Turkish Foreign Ministry through Greece’s embassy in Ankara. Athens rejected what it described as unfounded claims regarding Greek actions and emphasized that questions concerning sovereignty in the Aegean are governed by international treaties.
The dispute also involves Turkey’s decisions announced on August 15 concerning marine parks. Greece has objected to the Turkish measures where it believes they extend into areas that fall under Greek jurisdiction or involve Greek sovereign rights.
Greek officials said Athens considers such unilateral actions unacceptable and intends to continue raising the matter with European and international partners.
