India and Kyrgyzstan Look to Deepen Strategic Partnership as Modi Meets President Sadyr Zhaparov in Bishkek

BISHKEK: Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a productive meeting with Kyrgyzstan President Sadyr Zhaparov in Bishkek, with both sides discussing ways to give fresh momentum to the strategic partnership between India and the Kyrgyz Republic.

During the meeting, Modi conveyed his greetings to President Zhaparov and the people of Kyrgyzstan on the country’s Independence Day. He also congratulated Kyrgyzstan for its successful chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).

The discussions focused on expanding bilateral engagement across a wide range of sectors, reflecting India’s growing interest in strengthening its relationship with the Central Asian nation.

Healthcare, Technology and Agriculture on the Agenda

Healthcare and pharmaceuticals emerged as important areas for greater cooperation. The two countries also discussed expanding collaboration in information technology, digital technologies and other emerging areas that could contribute to economic development and innovation.

Mineral resources and agriculture were also highlighted as potential areas for deeper engagement. Greater cooperation in these sectors could create additional opportunities for investment, technology exchange and commercial partnerships between businesses and institutions in both countries.

Infrastructure development was another key area identified for enhanced cooperation, with both sides looking at ways to build stronger economic and connectivity links.

Defence and Security Cooperation to Expand

India and Kyrgyzstan also discussed strengthening their defence and security relationship.

The two countries have maintained defence contacts and cooperation over the years, and the latest discussions indicate an intention to further develop these links. Greater security cooperation could contribute to closer coordination on regional and strategic issues.

Focus on People-to-People Connections

Beyond government-to-government relations, Modi and Zhaparov emphasized the importance of stronger connections between the people of India and Kyrgyzstan.

Sports and tourism were identified as important channels for expanding these ties. Increased interaction among students, professionals, athletes, travellers and cultural communities could help deepen mutual understanding and strengthen the relationship at the grassroots level.
