Iran Offers Cybersecurity Expertise to Iraq as Tehran and Baghdad Expand Technology Cooperation
Tehran, September 1, 2026: Iran has offered to share its cybersecurity experience and technical expertise with Iraq as the two countries seek to deepen cooperation in communications and digital technology.
Iranian Minister of Information and Communications Technology Sattar Hashemi made the proposal following talks with Iraqi Communications Minister Mustafa Jabbar Sanad in Tehran. Hashemi said the discussions were part of Iran’s broader effort to develop what he described as “technology diplomacy.”
Cybersecurity Becomes a Major Focus
According to Iran’s official news agency, Hashemi said Iran has faced extensive cyberattacks, particularly during the country’s recent conflict, giving Iranian institutions experience in dealing with large-scale digital threats.
He argued that cybersecurity is an area where cooperation between Iran and Iraq could provide mutual benefits, particularly as both countries increasingly depend on digital communications and information systems.
Technology Diplomacy Drives New Engagement
The Iranian minister said the Iraqi delegation’s visit was connected to Tehran’s efforts to strengthen technology-based diplomatic relations.
Hashemi also referred to his previous visit to Iraq, where discussions focused on communications arrangements for pilgrims travelling during Arbaeen. During that visit, he invited his Iraqi counterpart to Iran’s Elecomp technology exhibition.
Potential for Broader Digital Cooperation
The latest discussions could open the door to wider cooperation between Iranian and Iraqi institutions in areas including cybersecurity, telecommunications and digital infrastructure.
As government services, financial systems and communications networks become increasingly dependent on connected technologies, protecting digital infrastructure has become an important concern for countries across the region.
For Iran and Iraq, closer technical cooperation could also strengthen institutional links between their respective communications ministries.
