UK Gives LGBT Veterans 100-Day Final Window to Apply for Financial Recognition
The United Kingdom government has issued a final reminder to veterans affected by the former ban on LGBT personnel in the armed forces, giving eligible applicants 100 days to seek financial recognition and other restorative measures.
The Ministry of Defence announced on September 3, 2026, that the application deadline will close on December 12, 2026. The government is urging eligible veterans to come forward before the deadline.
Payments Available to Eligible Veterans
Veterans who were dismissed or discharged because of the former policy may qualify for a £50,000 financial recognition payment.
Additional support may also be available through an Impact Payment of up to £20,000 for people who experienced other forms of harm, including investigations, harassment or disciplinary action connected with the ban.
Ban Covered Decades of Military Service
The measures follow an independent review examining the impact of the policy that restricted LGBT people from serving in the UK Armed Forces between 1967 and 2000.
The government says the restorative programme was established to recognise the consequences experienced by people affected by the policy.
Non-Financial Support Also Offered
Financial assistance is not the only form of restoration available. Eligible veterans can also seek an official letter of apology, replacement service items and the opportunity to participate in a restoration ceremony.
The government says these measures are intended to acknowledge the experiences of people whose military careers and lives were affected by the former restrictions.
