Wayanad Lok Sabha Bypoll Scheduled for November 13: Priyanka Gandhi to Contest
The Election Commission of India has announced that the Wayanad Lok Sabha bypoll will be held on November 13, alongside elections in 47 assembly constituencies across the country. This announcement was made by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar on Tuesday.
Key Dates for the Bypoll
Last date for filing nominations: October 25
Last date for withdrawal of candidature: 30th October
Counting of votes: November 23
The bypoll has been necessitated following the resignation of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from the Wayanad parliamentary seat on June 18, 2024, in favour of retaining his Rae Bareli constituency. In a significant move, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the Congress general secretary, has been announced as the Congress candidate for Wayanad.
Rahul Gandhi’s Emotional Farewell to Wayanad
Rahul Gandhi, who had represented Wayanad since 2019, penned an emotional letter to his constituents on June 24, expressing deep gratitude for the love and support he received during his tenure. In his letter, he mentioned that stepping down from the Wayanad seat was a difficult decision but necessary in order to focus on Rae Bareli. He also urged the people of Wayanad to extend the same trust and love to his sister, Priyanka Gandhi, and give her the opportunity to represent them in the 18th Lok Sabha.
Congress’ Focus on Wayanad
The Congress party views the Wayanad bypoll as crucial, with Priyanka Gandhi expected to carry forward the legacy of her brother. Wayanad has been a Congress stronghold, and the party is looking to retain the seat in the upcoming by-election. Priyanka Gandhi’s entry into the contest is seen as a strategic move by the Congress to strengthen its presence in southern India.
With both national and regional parties gearing up for the bypoll, Wayanad is set to witness a highly charged political contest on November 13, followed by the declaration of results on November 23.
