Global Population Growth Is Slowing as Falling Birth Rates Reshape the World’s Demographic Future

The world’s population is still growing, but the pace of increase is slowing rapidly as fertility rates decline across many countries. New demographic analysis suggests that the timing of the global population peak could arrive much earlier under lower-fertility scenarios, potentially transforming economies, labour markets and energy demand.

The global demographic picture is changing faster than many earlier projections suggested. The United Nations currently estimates that the world’s population will continue increasing for several more decades and reach approximately 10.3 billion people in the mid-2080s before gradually declining. However, newer scenario analysis highlights how substantially lower fertility could bring the population peak forward.

World Population Has Already Passed 8 Billion

Humanity crossed the 8-billion population milestone in 2022. By 2026, the global population is estimated at roughly 8.2 billion, although the precise figure varies between population databases and methodologies.

The U.S. Census Bureau’s latest international population estimates put the world’s population at approximately 8.2 billion in July 2026. Its projections indicate that the global total could reach 9 billion around 2039 and 10 billion around 2060, with a much later peak of about 10.6 billion in 2092.

The United Nations uses a different projection framework. Its 2024 World Population Prospects estimates a peak of about 10.3 billion in the mid-2080s, followed by a gradual decline to around 10.2 billion by 2100.

Fertility Decline Is Changing the Equation

One of the biggest forces behind the demographic shift is declining fertility.

The UN reports that the global fertility rate had fallen to approximately 2.3 births per woman in 2024, down significantly from previous decades. Many countries are already recording fertility levels below the approximate 2.1 births-per-woman replacement threshold associated with long-term population stability in low-mortality populations.

Lower fertility means that each new generation is, on average, smaller than the one before it in many countries.

The trend is particularly visible in several large economies, including China, where population decline has already begun. The UN says lower-than-expected fertility in some of the world’s largest countries has contributed to the expectation of an earlier global population peak than previous projections indicated.

A New 2026 Scenario Points to an Earlier Peak

A July 2026 analysis by Wood Mackenzie highlights how dramatically the demographic outlook could change under a low-birth-rate scenario.

The analysis says a UN low-fertility scenario could result in global population peaking at approximately 8.9 billion in 2053, followed by a contraction to about 7.0 billion by 2100.

Wood Mackenzie also reported that global fertility had fallen to approximately 2.2 births per woman in 2025, bringing the worldwide rate close to the replacement level.

This is a scenario rather than the UN’s central population projection. It demonstrates how sensitive future population size is to fertility assumptions.

Why the Population Peak Matters

A global population peak would represent a major turning point in human history.

For centuries, population growth generally meant more workers, more consumers and expanding demand for food, housing, energy and infrastructure. A shrinking population would create a very different economic environment.

Countries could face shortages of working-age people even while their overall populations remain large. Businesses may need to rely more heavily on automation, robotics and artificial intelligence to compensate for smaller labour forces.

Governments could also face greater pressure to support ageing populations through pensions, healthcare and social-care systems.

Population Ageing Is Accelerating

The demographic transition is not only about population size. Age structure is changing rapidly.

The UN projects that by 2080, the number of people aged 65 and above worldwide will exceed the number of children under 18. It also estimates that people aged 80 and older will outnumber infants by the middle of the 2030s.

This shift could significantly influence government spending, healthcare systems and retirement planning.

At the same time, countries with younger populations will continue to experience strong growth in their working-age populations, creating opportunities for economic development if sufficient jobs, education and infrastructure are available.

Population Growth Will Become More Concentrated

The future demographic map will not look the same everywhere.

The UN estimates that populations in 63 countries and areas, representing about 28% of the world’s population in 2024, had already reached their peak. Another 48 countries and areas are projected to reach their population peaks between 2025 and 2054.

Meanwhile, populations are expected to continue growing in many countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and parts of Asia.

The UN identifies countries including India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Pakistan and the United States among those where populations are expected to continue growing through 2054, although their eventual peak dates differ considerably.

India and Africa Will Be Important to the Future

The geographical centre of population growth is increasingly shifting toward countries with younger populations.

India remains one of the world’s most populous countries and is expected to continue growing in the coming decades. Several African countries, meanwhile, are projected to experience particularly rapid population expansion.

The UN estimates that in nine countries and areas, including Angola, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Niger and Somalia, populations could potentially double between 2024 and 2054.

This means that future global population growth will increasingly depend on demographic trends in a relatively small number of countries.

What It Could Mean for Energy Demand

Demographic change could also affect the global energy system.

Fewer people and slower population growth could eventually reduce some forms of long-term energy demand, particularly in countries experiencing population decline. However, rising living standards, urbanisation and higher energy consumption per person could offset some of that effect.

Wood Mackenzie has warned that falling fertility rates could become a structural factor affecting long-term energy demand forecasts.

The result will depend not only on how many people live on Earth, but also on where they live, how wealthy they become and how much energy they consume.

The world is not approaching an immediate population collapse. Instead, it is entering a period in which population growth becomes slower, older and increasingly uneven between regions.

The exact date and size of the eventual global population peak remain uncertain because future fertility, mortality and migration cannot be known with complete precision. Different institutions therefore produce different scenarios.

What is becoming increasingly clear, however, is that declining fertility and population ageing will become central economic and social issues during the decades ahead. The countries that adapt early through better education, productivity improvements, immigration policies, healthcare planning and technology could be better positioned for the demographic transformation.

The biggest demographic story of the coming century may therefore not be how many people the planet can accommodate, but how societies adapt when the era of continuously accelerating population growth eventually comes to an end.
