Germany: Wiesbaden Prepares for September 6 Local Election Re-Run
The German city of Wiesbaden is conducting a special repeat local election on September 6, 2026, following irregularities identified in one absentee voting district during the municipal elections held earlier this year.

The repeat ballot is being conducted in absentee voting district 99024, covering eligible voters from two voting districts in Wiesbaden’s northeastern area. The city administration has published the relevant election notices and voting information through its official government portal.
The re-run follows the original local elections held on March 15, 2026. Authorities determined that a repeat vote was necessary because of irregularities connected with the local council election in the affected district.
Only voters who met the eligibility requirements for the original election and had applied for postal voting are entitled to participate in the repeat ballot. The city has also provided procedures for voters who did not receive their postal voting materials or whose documents were lost or undelivered.
The election is being conducted entirely through postal voting. Authorities have instructed eligible voters to ensure that completed ballots reach the election office by 6 p.m. on September 6.
The development demonstrates the importance German local authorities place on maintaining the integrity of electoral processes. Repeating a vote when irregularities affect the validity of an election provides voters with another opportunity to participate under corrected procedures.
Wiesbaden’s election administration has also published information concerning approved candidate nominations, the official election notice and the final results of the wider 2026 municipal elections.
The September 6 re-run therefore represents a narrowly focused electoral process intended to resolve the earlier irregularities while preserving the legitimacy of the local democratic process.
