Samoa: Government Approves National Rugby Body as Official Governing Organisation
Samoa’s Cabinet has approved the Samoa Rugby Football Union (SRFU) as the country’s official organisation responsible for overseeing and developing the sport of rugby.

The decision places the SRFU at the centre of Samoa’s national rugby administration, with the Ministry of Sports and Recreation expected to lead work aimed at strengthening the structure and future development of the sport. The government announcement was reported on 6 September 2026.
The move is significant for a country where rugby has a major cultural and sporting role. Formal recognition of a national governing organisation can provide a clearer framework for administration, athlete development, competitions and long-term planning.
The government’s decision is also connected with efforts to restructure the management of rugby and create a more coordinated approach to the sport’s future. Greater organisational clarity could help improve cooperation between sporting authorities, players, clubs and other stakeholders.
For Samoa, rugby is more than a competitive activity, with the sport playing an important role in the country’s international identity. The national team has historically attracted significant attention both within the Pacific region and internationally.
The approval therefore represents an administrative development with potential implications for the country’s rugby programmes, talent development and participation in international competitions.
The Ministry of Sports and Recreation is expected to play a key role in implementing the restructuring process and supporting the development of rugby under the newly confirmed governing framework.
