Golders Green Stabbing Case Treated as Hate Crime, Not Terrorism
London: The legal classification of a stabbing case involving two Jewish men in London’s Golders Green has changed after prosecutors concluded that there was insufficient evidence to pursue a terrorist connection.

The incident occurred on April 29, 2026, when two men, aged 34 and 76, were stabbed in the north London neighbourhood. A 45-year-old man, Essa Suleiman, was subsequently arrested and charged with attempted murder.
Terrorism Connection No Longer Pursued
The attack was initially investigated as a suspected terrorist incident, with Counter Terrorism Policing leading the investigation.
Following a review of the evidence, however, the Crown Prosecution Service informed the court that it would not pursue a terrorism connection in the criminal proceedings. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the case continues to receive serious attention.
Hate Crime Element Remains
Although prosecutors are not pursuing terrorism charges, authorities have said there is sufficient evidence for the alleged actions to be treated as hate crimes.
The alleged anti-Jewish element will be presented to the court as an aggravating factor when sentencing is considered, if the defendant is ultimately convicted.
Defendant Denies the Charges
Suleiman has pleaded not guilty to the attempted-murder charges.
He is also accused of attempting to murder another man in a separate incident earlier on the same day and of possessing a bladed article in a public place. He has denied those allegations as well.
The charges remain allegations, and the defendant is entitled to a fair trial.
Investigation Initially Declared Terrorist Incident
Immediately after the Golders Green attack, Counter Terrorism Policing formally declared it a terrorist incident while investigators examined whether the victims had been deliberately targeted because they were Jewish.
Police subsequently reviewed the evidence and worked with prosecutors before the decision was made not to pursue a terrorism connection in the court proceedings.
Trial Scheduled for 2027
The criminal case remains active. The defendant is expected to return to court before the full trial, which is scheduled to begin in March 2027.
Police and prosecutors continue to handle the case while limiting public comments that could potentially affect the ongoing proceedings.
The Golders Green case remains significant for London’s Jewish community, particularly amid other recent incidents involving Jewish institutions and individuals in the capital.
