Nepal and Sri Lanka Discuss Stronger Bilateral Cooperation at UN General Assembly
New York: Nepal and Sri Lanka have discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations during a meeting between their foreign ministers on the sidelines of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Nepal’s Foreign Minister Shisir Khanal met Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister for Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath on September 28. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation between the two South Asian countries.
Focus on Bilateral Relations
The two ministers reviewed areas where Nepal and Sri Lanka could deepen cooperation. Their discussions covered trade, tourism, education, culture, connectivity and people-to-people relations.
They also emphasized the importance of using existing bilateral mechanisms more actively and holding relevant meetings to maintain regular diplomatic engagement.
Nepal Thanks Sri Lanka for Assistance
Khanal expressed appreciation to the Sri Lankan government and people for providing economic and humanitarian assistance following a recent climate-related disaster in Nepal.
The issue has become an important part of Nepal’s international diplomatic engagement as the country seeks greater international cooperation for disaster recovery and climate resilience.
Nepal has also been highlighting the vulnerability of Himalayan communities to climate-related events at the UN General Assembly.
Meeting With UN General Assembly President
Khanal separately met Khalilur Rahman, president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, at UN headquarters.
During the meeting, Khanal congratulated Rahman on his election and pledged Nepal’s support and cooperation during his tenure. The two also discussed strengthening multilateralism and the role of the United Nations in addressing global challenges.
Climate Change Remains a Major Nepalese Concern
Climate-related disasters have featured prominently in Nepal’s diplomatic activities at this year’s General Assembly.
Nepal has been seeking greater international attention to the effects of climate change on vulnerable countries, particularly those with mountainous ecosystems.
Foreign Minister Khanal has also participated in discussions focused on climate resilience and cooperation among countries facing similar environmental challenges.
South Asian Cooperation in Focus
The Nepal-Sri Lanka meeting comes at a time when South Asian countries are seeking to expand cooperation in areas extending beyond traditional diplomatic relations.
Trade, tourism, education and connectivity provide opportunities for greater interaction between the two countries, while cultural links can further strengthen people-to-people relations.
The two governments are expected to continue discussions through established diplomatic channels.
Broader Diplomatic Engagement
Nepal’s participation in the UN General Assembly has provided an opportunity for its officials to engage with international counterparts on both global and bilateral issues.
The meetings with Sri Lanka and the UN General Assembly leadership demonstrate Nepal’s focus on maintaining multilateral engagement while simultaneously developing relations with individual partner countries.
The latest discussions are expected to contribute to further diplomatic and sectoral cooperation between Nepal and Sri Lanka.
