Union Cabinet Approves Two Major Railway Multi-Tracking Projects to Boost Freight Capacity and Sustainable Transport

The Union Cabinet has approved two significant railway infrastructure projects aimed at expanding capacity, improving freight movement, and reducing congestion on some of eastern India’s busiest rail corridors. The projects include the doubling of the Paradeep–Haridaspur railway section and the construction of a fourth railway line between Rajkharsawan and Dangoaposi.

These investments form part of India’s broader strategy to modernize its railway network, enhance logistics efficiency, and encourage a greater shift of freight transportation from roads to railways, supporting both economic growth and environmental sustainability.

Strengthening the Paradeep–Haridaspur Corridor

One of the approved projects involves doubling the railway line connecting Paradeep and Haridaspur. This corridor plays a crucial role in transporting bulk commodities from the Paradeep Port, one of India’s major maritime gateways on the eastern coast.

The additional track will significantly increase line capacity, allowing more freight and passenger trains to operate simultaneously while reducing delays caused by heavy traffic.

Improved connectivity is expected to facilitate faster transportation of coal, iron ore, fertilizers, steel, petroleum products, and containerized cargo moving through the port.

Fourth Railway Line for Rajkharsawan–Dangoaposi

The second project focuses on constructing a fourth railway line between Rajkharsawan and Dangoaposi, an important mineral transportation corridor in eastern India.

This section serves regions rich in iron ore and other minerals, making it one of the busiest freight routes in the country. The fourth line will provide additional capacity for freight operations while improving the reliability of passenger train services.

By separating different categories of rail traffic more efficiently, the project aims to reduce congestion and enhance operational flexibility.

Rail transport generally consumes less fuel per tonne of cargo than road transport, making it a more energy-efficient and environmentally sustainable mode of transportation.

Boost for Port Connectivity

The Paradeep–Haridaspur project will strengthen connectivity with Paradeep Port, enabling faster evacuation of imported and exported goods.

Improved rail links reduce turnaround times for cargo movement, helping ports operate more efficiently while supporting India’s growing international trade.
