Tamil Nadu has witnessed significant infrastructure growth over the past ten years, transforming its transportation network and boosting economic development. Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several key projects have been undertaken to enhance road, rail, metro, and aviation connectivity in the state. Expansion of National Highways Over 4,100 kilometers of national highways have been constructed in Tamil Nadu, improving connectivity between key cities, industrial hubs, and rural areas. These roadways have facilitated smoother transportation, reduced travel time, and enhanced economic activities in the region. Railway Network Modernization Since 2014, more than 1,303 kilometers of new railway tracks have been laid across Tamil Nadu. Additionally, around 2,242 kilometers of railway lines have been electrified, contributing to the electrification of 94% of the state's railway network. This modernization effort has resulted in faster, energy-efficient, and environmentally friendly rail transport. Expansion of Chennai Metro Rail The Chennai Metro Rail network has been extended over 54 kilometers, improving urban mobility and reducing traffic congestion in the capital city. The metro has become a reliable and sustainable public transport system for daily commuters. Development of Regional Airports Under the UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, Salem Airport has been revived and is now operational. Simultaneously, construction work at Neyveli and Vellore airports has been completed, expanding regional air connectivity. These developments have improved accessibility to remote areas, boosting trade and tourism. Special Financial Assistance for Infrastructure Projects The Central Government, under the Special Assistance Scheme for Capital Expenditure, has supported state governments in infrastructure investments. Tamil Nadu has received over ₹14,900 crore between 2020-21 and 2023-24 under this scheme. This funding has been granted beyond the recommendations of the Finance Commission, ensuring that Tamil Nadu benefits from interest-free loans for 50 years for infrastructure projects. Conclusion Tamil Nadu's infrastructure growth over the last decade reflects the strong commitment of the Central Government to the state's development. With continuous investments in roads, railways, metro, and aviation, Tamil Nadu is progressing towards becoming a leading economic and industrial powerhouse in India. These advancements not only enhance connectivity but also create new employment opportunities and support economic growth across the state.
