MAKURDI, NIGERIA — September 6, 2026: The Benue State Government has renewed its warning against construction along waterways and other flood-prone locations, saying improper development and blocked drainage channels are contributing to recurring flooding across parts of the state.

The government said property development must follow approved planning procedures, including the preparation of appropriate architectural designs and securing the necessary authorisations before construction begins.

Authorities also appealed to residents to stop dumping waste into drainage channels. According to the state government, blocked waterways can restrict the movement of stormwater and increase the risk of flooding when heavy rainfall occurs.

The administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia said it is pursuing longer-term infrastructure measures rather than relying only on emergency responses after floods occur. One of the projects highlighted by the government is a major drainage intervention around Achusah.

The drainage project is being implemented through the Benue State Agro-Climatic Watershed Management Agency. The government said the system is designed to connect existing drainage routes with the river, with the objective of reducing repeated flooding in affected communities.

The warning comes as flood management remains an important issue for communities located near waterways and low-lying areas. Officials are encouraging residents to comply with development regulations and avoid activities that obstruct drainage infrastructure.

The state government said its broader objective is to establish sustainable flood-control measures capable of reducing the repeated damage caused by inundation, while encouraging communities to cooperate with authorities on drainage protection and responsible land development.

The latest statement places responsibility on both government infrastructure programmes and public behaviour, particularly in preventing the obstruction of channels that are essential for carrying excess rainwater away from populated areas.
