The Ministry of Women and Child Development is celebrating the 7th Rashtriya Poshan Maah with a spotlight on Complementary Feeding, an essential component of infant nutrition. This year’s month-long event aims to enhance ground-level nutrition practices and foster critical behavioral changes.

The theme of Complementary Feeding underscores its importance for infants as they transition from exclusive breastfeeding to a varied diet. As babies approach the 6-month mark, their nutritional needs surpass what breast milk alone can provide. Complementary foods become necessary to meet these evolving needs and support healthy growth.

The ongoing Poshan Maah has seen an impressive participation, with reports highlighting 1.79 crore activities nationwide. Among these, over 20 lakh initiatives focus specifically on Complementary Feeding. This widespread involvement reflects a strong commitment across communities to address infant nutrition challenges.

Complementary feeding is a crucial period during which children are particularly vulnerable to undernutrition. Educating parents and caregivers about the appropriate timing, nutritional quality, quantity, and frequency of complementary foods is vital. Such awareness efforts aim to ensure that children receive the necessary nutrients for their healthy development.

The 7th Rashtriya Poshan Maah has engaged 756 districts across 35 states and Union Territories in various awareness and sensitization activities. This extensive reach highlights the collective effort to improve nutritional outcomes for children across the country.

As the month progresses, the focus remains on enhancing understanding and practices related to complementary feeding, ultimately contributing to the overall goal of improving child health and nutrition in India.
