Finland Joins French Nuclear Deterrence Initiative to Strengthen European Security
Helsinki, September Finland has joined France’s initiative aimed at strengthening the European dimension of nuclear deterrence, marking a new step in Helsinki’s defence cooperation with Paris amid growing security concerns across Europe.
The Finnish government said the decision followed discussions between Finland and France and is intended to contribute to European security while deepening bilateral defence cooperation. Finland emphasized that the initiative does not replace NATO’s existing nuclear deterrence arrangements.
Under the framework, cooperation could include strategic discussions, participation in military exercises and other forms of defence coordination. Any future arrangements will be developed through further consultations between the participating countries.
Finnish President Alexander Stubb has said that Finland’s primary security framework remains NATO and the European Union. He also stated that Finland does not plan to host nuclear weapons on its territory during peacetime.
Finland’s decision comes alongside broader efforts to strengthen European defence cooperation. Earlier this month, European leaders meeting in Finland’s Rovaniemi highlighted the strategic importance of the Arctic region for European security and called for stronger European engagement in the north.
Finland has also continued its military support for Ukraine. On September 15, the Finnish government approved its 34th defence assistance package for Ukraine, valued at approximately €290 million, bringing the total value of Finland’s defence materiel assistance to Ukraine to about €3.6 billion.
The developments reflect Finland’s broader effort to strengthen its defence capabilities and cooperation with European and NATO partners as the security environment in Europe continues to evolve.
