Germany: Federal Prosecutors Take Over Investigation Into Suspected Power Grid Sabotage
Berlin, September Germany’s Federal Prosecutor General has taken over the investigation into a series of suspected sabotage attacks targeting the country’s electricity infrastructure, as authorities continue examining the activities of a 48-year-old man who was arrested earlier this week.
The suspect, identified by German media as Daniel V., was arrested near the Weisweiler power plant in western Germany after police had been searching for him for several days. Investigators suspect that he targeted electricity infrastructure in North Rhine-Westphalia, Brandenburg and Saxony.
Suspect Allegedly Targeted Electricity Infrastructure
Investigators believe the suspect attempted to disrupt high-voltage electricity lines near several power plants. Authorities say homemade devices were allegedly used to place conductive material across power lines, causing short circuits.
At least two incidents reportedly resulted in short circuits that temporarily affected individual power-generation units. However, authorities said the incidents did not result in a widespread electricity blackout affecting the public.
Explosive Materials Recovered
Police reportedly found the suspect near Weisweiler carrying explosive devices. Investigators also discovered additional materials at a nearby concealed campsite.
Authorities have been examining the materials and searching surrounding locations for possible additional devices or evidence connected to the suspected attacks.
More Than 160 Possible Targets Reportedly Listed
German authorities have also reported finding a notebook containing information about more than 160 possible or previous sabotage targets. Investigators are examining the information to determine whether the suspect planned additional attacks.
Officials have said there is currently no confirmed evidence that the suspect was acting on behalf of a foreign government or with accomplices. The investigation remains ongoing.
Federal Investigation Underway
Because of the significance of the suspected attacks on critical infrastructure, Germany’s Federal Prosecutor General has taken over the investigation. Authorities are examining allegations including sabotage, disruption of public utilities and offences involving explosives.
The suspect is currently in pre-trial detention. Investigators are continuing to determine the full extent of the alleged operation and whether additional locations or people are connected to the case.
The allegations against the suspect have not been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless convicted.
