India to Establish First Dedicated ICMR Centre for High-Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research in Keylong

India is set to take a major leap in mountain healthcare and biomedical science with the establishment of its first dedicated centre for high-altitude medicine and public health research in Keylong, Himachal Pradesh. Union Health Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) facility on 11 July, marking a significant milestone in strengthening healthcare innovation for the country’s Himalayan region.

Located in the high-altitude district of Lahaul and Spiti, Keylong offers an ideal environment for studying the unique health challenges faced by people living in mountainous terrain. The upcoming ICMR centre will serve as a national hub for scientific research on the physiological effects of high-altitude conditions, climate-sensitive diseases, emergency medical care, and strategies to improve healthcare delivery in remote regions.

The institution will be the first ICMR centre in India exclusively dedicated to understanding how altitude, extreme weather, and changing climatic conditions affect human health. Researchers will investigate issues such as altitude sickness, reduced oxygen levels, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, maternal and child health, nutrition, infectious diseases, and the long-term health impacts of life in mountainous environments.

A key objective of the new facility is to build climate-resilient healthcare systems capable of addressing emerging public health risks associated with climate change. As rising temperatures alter disease patterns and increase the frequency of extreme weather events across the Himalayas, the centre will develop evidence-based solutions to improve preparedness, disease surveillance, and medical response in vulnerable communities.

The research centre is expected to support biomedical innovation by combining advanced laboratory science with field-based studies conducted in high-altitude environments. Scientists will collaborate with hospitals, universities, defence medical institutions, and state health departments to generate data that can improve diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of altitude-related illnesses.

Beyond scientific research, the centre will play an important role in strengthening healthcare services for local populations. It is expected to provide training for doctors, nurses, paramedics, and public health professionals working in mountainous areas. Capacity-building programmes will help medical personnel respond more effectively to emergencies, environmental health risks, and challenges associated with delivering care in remote regions.

The facility will also contribute to protecting the health of defence personnel, disaster response teams, trekkers, mountaineers, pilgrims, and tourists who frequently travel to high-altitude destinations. Research findings are expected to improve national guidelines for acclimatisation, emergency treatment, and preventive healthcare for individuals exposed to low-oxygen environments.

Another important focus will be community-based public health research. Scientists will study local health practices, nutrition, environmental factors, and disease trends among Himalayan communities to design interventions that are culturally appropriate and scientifically effective. These findings could help improve healthcare planning not only in Himachal Pradesh but also across other Himalayan states and Union Territories.

The establishment of the ICMR Centre for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research reflects India’s growing investment in specialised medical science tailored to its diverse geographical conditions. By creating a permanent research ecosystem in the Himalayas, the country aims to generate world-class scientific knowledge while improving healthcare outcomes for millions of people living and working in high-altitude regions.

As construction begins following the foundation stone ceremony on 11 July, the Keylong centre is expected to emerge as a national centre of excellence for mountain medicine, climate-health research, and biomedical innovation. The initiative represents a significant step toward building a stronger, more resilient, and scientifically informed healthcare system capable of meeting the unique challenges of India’s Himalayan landscape.
