Italy Police Arrest Suspected Cosa Nostra Boss in Fresh Mafia Investigation
Agrigento, Italy — Italian authorities have arrested suspected Sicilian Mafia boss Leo Sutera in a new investigation targeting alleged Cosa Nostra activity in the Agrigento area.
Police carried out four precautionary detention orders following a request from the Palermo Anti-Mafia Prosecutor’s Office. The operation involved the Central Operations Service and mobile police units from Palermo and Agrigento.
Sutera, 68, is described by investigators as a leading figure within the alleged Mafia organization operating in Agrigento province. The arrest order was formally served while he was being held in the detainee section of Civico Hospital in Palermo, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Three other people were also targeted in the operation: Giuseppe Tabone, 53, Maria Salvato, 55, and Vito Vaccaro, 57. Authorities accuse them of allegedly assisting Sutera and facilitating the activities of Cosa Nostra.
The latest investigation demonstrates that Italian authorities continue to focus heavily on suspected organized-crime structures in Sicily, particularly networks believed to retain influence through relationships between senior figures and their associates.
The charges against Sutera concern alleged participation in a Mafia-type criminal organization. The other three suspects face allegations of aggravated personal assistance connected to the alleged activities of Cosa Nostra.
The operation was coordinated through Sicily’s anti-Mafia investigative and prosecutorial authorities, reflecting the continued cooperation between police units and prosecutors in cases involving suspected organized crime.
Investigators will now examine the evidence underlying the latest accusations and the alleged roles of each person involved. As the case moves through the Italian judicial system, the suspects remain entitled to the presumption of innocence until any final conviction.
The development comes as Italian law-enforcement agencies continue efforts to identify and disrupt Mafia structures operating across Sicily and their networks of support.
