Paris Knife Attack Leaves Three Women Injured as Bystanders Help Stop Suspect

Paris, France — A knife attack in northwestern Paris left three women injured after a man allegedly approached pedestrians carrying two kitchen knives, triggering a dramatic intervention by members of the public and an off-duty police officer.

The incident happened in the Porte de Clichy area at around 11:30 a.m. on July 27. According to French authorities, the victims were 19, 24 and 36 years old. Two of the women suffered serious injuries, while the third sustained less severe wounds. All three were taken to hospital for medical treatment.

The situation changed when several people nearby noticed the attacker and moved to stop him. Witness Mohamed-Ali Bouhadjar told Reuters that he saw the man holding two large knives and attacking a woman. Bystanders intervened, with one person reportedly throwing a suitcase toward the attacker, causing him to drop the weapons. Several people then helped restrain him.

An off-duty police officer who was in the area subsequently detained the suspect and contacted colleagues. French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez praised the officer’s actions, describing the intervention as courageous.

Authorities said the suspect made incoherent statements while being detained, and investigators initially could not establish a clear motive for the violence. France’s National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office was monitoring the case while authorities assessed whether the incident met the criteria for an anti-terror investigation.

The investigation later revealed that the suspect had already been receiving psychiatric care. On July 28, prosecutors said his condition was considered incompatible with police custody, and he was transferred to a psychiatric facility operated by the Paris police prefecture.

The incident prompted renewed discussion about public safety in busy areas of the French capital, particularly where large numbers of pedestrians gather. Police investigators continued examining witness accounts, video footage and other evidence to establish exactly how the attack unfolded.

Authorities have emphasized that the suspect’s statements alone should not be treated as proof of motive. The investigation and legal proceedings will determine the circumstances and responsibility surrounding the attack.

The case also highlighted the role of ordinary members of the public in preventing further injuries. Their intervention, followed by the action of the off-duty officer, brought the immediate threat under control before emergency services took over.
