Kenya’s ODM Prepares for Raila Odinga Anniversary Amid Political Questions
Nairobi: Kenya’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is preparing a month-long programme to commemorate the first anniversary of the death of its founding leader and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, while the party continues to face important political questions ahead of the 2027 general election.

ODM leader Oburu Oginga has returned to Kenya after spending several weeks in the United Kingdom. His return comes as the party prepares a series of activities scheduled throughout October in memory of Raila Odinga.
The programme, known as “Mwezi wa Baba,” is scheduled to begin with a nationwide candle-lighting event and will include activities in several parts of the country.
Raila Odinga died in October 2025 while receiving medical treatment in India. His death marked a major moment for Kenyan politics and left ODM without the leader who had shaped the party’s national political identity for many years.
Oburu Oginga is expected to play a central role in the commemorative programme. His return comes at a time when ODM is also dealing with discussions over its political direction and relationships with other parties.
The party’s future position ahead of the 2027 election remains an important issue in Kenyan politics. ODM has been involved in cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration, while different figures within Kenya’s political opposition have continued to discuss possible alliances and electoral arrangements.
The anniversary programme is therefore expected to attract significant political attention beyond its commemorative purpose.
ODM officials have presented the events as an opportunity for supporters to remember Raila’s political legacy and reflect on the principles associated with his long career.
At the same time, Kenya’s political parties are already preparing for the next general election. The country’s electoral commission has been conducting preparations and engaging political stakeholders ahead of the August 2027 national vote.
The developments within ODM could therefore become increasingly significant as political parties begin positioning themselves for the next electoral cycle.
For now, the October programme is expected to keep Raila Odinga’s political legacy at the centre of public discussion while ODM continues considering its organisational and political direction.
