Netherlands: West Nile Virus Cases Rise as Three People Die
The Netherlands is facing a growing public-health concern after the country recorded 18 confirmed West Nile virus infections and three deaths in recent weeks, according to the Dutch public health institute RIVM
The latest figures represent a significant development because the Netherlands had reported its first locally acquired West Nile infection since 2020 only recently. RIVM subsequently identified additional cases, with two more deaths reported at a Dutch hospital.
West Nile virus is mainly transmitted to people through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Most infected people experience no symptoms or only mild illness, but a small proportion can develop serious neurological disease. The World Health Organization estimates that severe illness occurs in roughly one out of every 150 infected people.
Health authorities are also watching developments elsewhere in Europe, where West Nile infections have increased in countries including Greece and Italy. Scientists have linked the wider expansion of mosquito-borne diseases partly to warmer conditions, which can extend the period and geographical range in which mosquitoes thrive.
The Dutch situation highlights the growing importance of mosquito surveillance and public-health preparedness as Europe experiences increasingly unusual weather and prolonged periods of high temperatures.
