São Paulo Remains Under Severe Storm Alert as Heavy Rain Threatens the State
São Paulo is facing another day of unsettled weather, with authorities warning of intense rainfall, strong winds and thunderstorms across several parts of the state.
An orange-level storm alert is in effect for southern areas of São Paulo, the coast and the metropolitan region. Other parts of the state are under a lower-level weather alert as unstable conditions continue.
In the capital, widespread rain is expected throughout Sunday, with temperatures remaining unusually low. Forecasts indicate that temperatures could stay between 14°C and 16°C, creating a distinctly cold and wet day for residents.
The weather system also raises concerns about flooding and landslides. Saturated ground has increased the vulnerability of some areas, while dense urban development and limited drainage capacity can make heavy rainfall particularly disruptive.
Risk is considered especially significant around Sorocaba, the Vale do Ribeira and Greater São Paulo. Residents in vulnerable locations are being urged to remain alert as rainfall intensity can change quickly.
Strong winds and lightning are another concern associated with the storms. People travelling during periods of intense weather may encounter reduced visibility, waterlogged roads and hazardous driving conditions.
The current spell of wet weather is also contributing to unusually high rainfall totals for September. São Paulo has already recorded nearly 200 millimetres of accumulated rainfall during the month, making this one of the wettest Septembers in the state’s recent historical records.
Emergency authorities are continuing to monitor conditions and have advised residents to avoid areas susceptible to flooding and landslides. People are also being encouraged to follow official warnings as the weather situation develops.
The combination of heavy rain, saturated soil and further thunderstorms means that local conditions could deteriorate rapidly in vulnerable communities.
Residents are therefore being advised to take precautions before travelling, secure loose objects around homes and avoid unnecessary movement through flooded areas.
