Sweden Expels Iranian Embassy Employee Over Security Concerns

Stockholm, Septembe Sweden has expelled an employee of Iran’s embassy in Stockholm and summoned Iran’s ambassador after Swedish authorities accused Tehran of activities that they said were incompatible with diplomatic rules and posed security concerns inside the country.

Sweden’s Foreign Ministry said on September 16 that the Iranian ambassador had been summoned and that an embassy employee had been instructed to leave Sweden. Authorities cited activities considered incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which establishes rules governing diplomatic missions.

Swedish officials did not initially disclose specific details about the conduct that led to the expulsion. However, Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer later said the decision was connected to what Stockholm considers a continuing security threat from Iranian activities.

According to Strömmer, Swedish authorities have previously identified activities targeting people opposed to the Iranian government as well as Jewish and Israeli interests in Sweden. He also said criminal networks had allegedly been used in some of these activities.

Swedish Security Service spokesman Jonathan Svensson similarly said Iran continues to engage in activities that Swedish authorities regard as security threats, including alleged attempts to use criminal networks as proxies for violent actions.

The issue has particular significance because Sweden’s security authorities have previously investigated suspected attempts to target Israeli interests in Stockholm. Swedish authorities have previously accused Iran of using criminal networks to facilitate such activities, allegations that Tehran has denied.

The diplomatic action comes amid heightened tensions between Iran and several Western countries. Sweden’s decision could therefore add another point of friction to relations between Stockholm and Tehran.

For Sweden, the government has emphasized the protection of its citizens and national security. The expulsion demonstrates one of the diplomatic measures available to a country when it believes a foreign diplomatic representative has acted outside the accepted framework for diplomatic activity.

The Iranian government has not immediately provided a detailed public response to the latest Swedish decision, according to reports available at the time of publication.

The incident is likely to keep Sweden-Iran diplomatic relations under close observation as Stockholm continues assessing alleged foreign interference and security activities on Swedish territory.
