Vietnam Faces Heavy Rain, Flash-Flood and Landslide Risks Across Eight Localities
Hanoi, September 17, 2026: Vietnam is facing heightened weather risks today as persistent heavy rainfall has increased the possibility of flash floods and landslides across several northern and north-central areas.

Authorities have issued warnings for Son La, Phu Tho, Lao Cai, Tuyen Quang, Thai Nguyen, Quang Ninh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, where saturated ground conditions could make mountainous and low-lying areas particularly vulnerable.
Some locations have already recorded more than 250 millimetres of rain, leaving the soil heavily saturated. Additional rainfall expected on September 17 could increase the likelihood of sudden flooding and slope failures, according to Vietnam’s National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.
Rainfall has also affected residential communities. Recent flooding has inundated approximately 1,550 homes in Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An, while infrastructure in Lao Cai and Thanh Hoa has also been damaged.
Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable areas to closely monitor weather warnings and take precautions, particularly those living near rivers, streams and unstable hillsides.
The situation comes as Vietnam is also preparing for the possible effects of a strengthening El Niño later this year. Climate forecasts indicate that the weather phenomenon could contribute to unusual heat, drought and unpredictable storms in parts of Southeast Asia.
The combination of short-term heavy rainfall and broader climate patterns is making weather conditions increasingly difficult to predict. Officials are therefore maintaining close monitoring of rainfall, river levels and landslide-prone locations.
For communities already affected by flooding, the immediate priority remains protecting residents, maintaining transportation links and responding quickly to any new flash floods or landslides.
Vietnam’s authorities are expected to continue issuing localized warnings as weather conditions develop throughout the day.
