Thailand Partners With OpenAI to Accelerate the Next Generation of AI Startups

Bangkok, August 28, 2026: Thailand has taken a major step toward strengthening its artificial intelligence ecosystem with the launch of a new accelerator created jointly by the country’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (MHESI) and OpenAI.

The OpenAI x MHESI AI Accelerator is an eight-week program designed to help Thai startups transform promising AI prototypes into reliable products that can eventually be deployed in the real world. The initiative was announced in Bangkok during the Techsauce Global Summit 2026.

Ten Startups Selected for the First Cohort

The first group consists of 10 Thai startups, with five working in health and wellness and five concentrating on education.

The participating companies are CARIVA, Wello Food, Dietz, Precisionize, FitSloth, Curico, insKru, Floaino, EasyKids Robotics and Globish. Their projects are aimed at applying artificial intelligence to practical challenges rather than focusing solely on experimental demonstrations.

The program is being supported by Thailand’s National Innovation Agency, Mahidol University and Techsauce, creating a network that combines government resources, academic expertise and private-sector experience.

Moving From Prototype to Practical Technology

One of the central goals of the accelerator is to close the gap between an impressive AI demonstration and a product that people can actually depend on.

During the eight-week program, founders will work with mentors from OpenAI and Thailand’s technology and research communities. They will receive guidance on product development, engineering, testing, evaluation, responsible AI, privacy, security, operating costs, growth and fundraising.

Each participating startup will also receive US$2,000 in OpenAI API credits, one-to-one technical guidance and access to OpenAI’s latest frontier models.

Healthcare and Education at the Center

The program places particular emphasis on healthcare, wellness and education—areas where technology can have a direct effect on people’s everyday lives.

One example is CARIVA, which is developing a multilingual AI voice agent for hospital telephone services. The technology is intended to assist with tasks such as appointment handling while helping identify situations that may require urgent attention.

Another participant, Curico, is developing AI-supported learning technology for children and educators. The company plans to test its platform in Bangkok childcare settings and conduct training involving more than 200 teachers.

Thailand Wants to Strengthen Its AI Position

The accelerator is part of Thailand’s broader ambition to develop itself as a regional AI innovation center.

OpenAI says Thailand ranks among the world’s top 20 countries in terms of weekly active ChatGPT users. It also reported that weekly active use of its Codex coding tool in Thailand has increased more than 350-fold since the beginning of 2026.

For Thailand, the objective is not simply to increase AI consumption. The government wants local companies and researchers to turn AI capabilities into products that address domestic needs and can eventually compete internationally.

Building an AI Ecosystem Around Local Expertise

The partnership brings together several parts of Thailand’s innovation system.

MHESI will help connect participating startups with research and talent networks. The National Innovation Agency will provide links to funding and business-growth opportunities, while Mahidol University will contribute academic expertise and mentors.

This structure is intended to give startups access to more than technology alone. The organizers want founders to have connections with researchers, investors, government agencies and potential users as they develop their products.

Reliability Is a Major Focus

The organizers are placing particular importance on reliability because several participating companies are developing solutions for high-impact fields.

An AI system used in education or healthcare cannot simply produce impressive demonstrations. It must be tested with representative users, evaluated carefully and developed with appropriate privacy and security safeguards.

By the end of the accelerator, each startup is expected to demonstrate a working product or substantial improvement, provide evidence from users and present a realistic pathway toward implementation.

From Local Innovation to Global Markets

The partnership also reflects Thailand’s intention to help domestic startups move beyond the country’s borders.

Thai officials have described the initiative as a way to connect local founders with global AI expertise while strengthening the country’s ability to create trusted technology domestically. The broader ambition is to build products in Thailand that can eventually serve customers in other markets.

The accelerator is therefore not just a training program. It is designed as a bridge between research, entrepreneurship, investment and commercial deployment.

A Potential Model for Southeast Asia

The initiative could also become significant beyond Thailand.

Countries across Southeast Asia are attempting to develop AI capabilities while avoiding dependence solely on imported technology. Programs that combine international AI expertise with local universities, governments and startups could offer one possible model for developing regional AI ecosystems.

For Thailand, the immediate test will be whether the 10 participating companies can turn their ideas into products that demonstrate measurable value.

What Comes Next

The eight-week program will culminate in a Demo Day scheduled for November 6, 2026, where participating startups are expected to present their progress and results.

If successful, the program could provide more than a short-term boost to the selected startups. It could help establish a repeatable pathway for Thai AI companies to move from early experimentation to deployment, investment and international expansion.

Thailand’s latest partnership with OpenAI consequently represents a broader shift in the country’s AI strategy: from simply adopting artificial intelligence to building companies, products and expertise around it.
