Myanmar Announces By-Election to Fill Vacant Parliamentary Seats
YANGON — Myanmar’s Union Election Commission has announced plans to hold a parliamentary by-election to fill vacant seats across the country’s national and regional legislatures.

According to the commission’s announcement, the upcoming electoral process will cover a total of 55 constituencies across different levels of government.
The election will involve 34 constituencies in the Pyithu Hluttaw, Myanmar’s lower house of parliament, while five seats will be contested in the Amyotha Hluttaw, the upper house.
Additionally, 16 constituencies in various regional and state legislatures will participate in the electoral process.
First-Past-the-Post System to Be Used
The commission has confirmed that all 55 constituencies will follow the first-past-the-post (FPTP) electoral system.
Under this system, the candidate receiving the highest number of votes in an individual constituency wins the seat, even without securing an absolute majority.
The electoral arrangement will apply consistently across the lower house, upper house and regional or state-level parliamentary contests.
Parliamentary Vacancies to Be Addressed
The by-election is intended to address vacant parliamentary positions and restore representation in the affected constituencies.
The results will determine which candidates secure the available legislative seats and gain the opportunity to participate in parliamentary responsibilities.
The election is expected to attract attention as Myanmar continues to navigate its complex political environment. The process will also be closely watched for its implications for parliamentary representation and the country’s broader political landscape.
