Taipei, June 20 – Tensions in the Taiwan Strait escalated once again as Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defence (MND) reported a significant uptick in Chinese military activity. According to an official statement, Taiwan detected 50 Chinese military aircraft and six naval vessels operating near its airspace and territorial waters by 6 a.m. local time on Friday.

The MND noted that 46 out of the 50 aircraft crossed the median line of the Taiwan Strait, a crucial unofficial boundary between Taiwan and mainland China. These aircraft entered various sectors of Taiwan’s Air Defence Identification Zone (ADIZ), including the northern, southwestern, and eastern regions.

In response to the intrusion, Taiwan deployed its own surveillance and defense measures. These included dispatching fighter jets, mobilizing naval assets, and activating land-based missile defense systems to closely track the movements of China’s People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and Navy (PLAN).

The statement from Taiwan emphasized its alertness and readiness, stressing that the situation was being closely observed and appropriately addressed in accordance with national defense protocols.

The incident is seen as part of a broader pattern of increasing Chinese military maneuvers around Taiwan, actions that Taipei views as deliberate provocations. This surge in activity comes amid heightened cross-strait tensions and global concern over potential conflict in the Indo-Pacific region.

With this development, Taiwan reiterates its commitment to safeguarding its territorial sovereignty while urging for peace and stability in the region.
