July 2, 2025 – Often admired for their environmental importance, forests are now being recognized for another vital role: driving economic development and supporting millions of livelihoods, particularly in rural regions. A new report by the World Bank underscores how forests provide not only climate and biodiversity benefits but also act as a massive source of employment, currently sustaining over 33 million jobs worldwide.

The World Bank’s analysis calls for increased investment in forest restoration and agroforestry, two underutilized tools with enormous potential to boost job creation while preserving ecosystems. This shift redefines forests as active economic contributors, capable of generating sustainable income while helping fight poverty and climate change.

Restoration efforts, such as replanting trees, managing nurseries, and rehabilitating degraded lands, are highly labor-intensive. These efforts create green jobs while improving soil quality, capturing carbon, and restoring local biodiversity. As more governments and organizations turn to climate-smart strategies, forest restoration is emerging as a key pillar of environmental and economic resilience.

Agroforestry—the integration of trees with crops or livestock—offers a more diversified and sustainable farming model. According to FAO and UNEP, over 1.2 billion people globally depend on agroforestry systems for their livelihood. This method boosts crop yields, protects soil, enhances biodiversity, and supplies timber, fruit, and other products—strengthening food security and farmer incomes.

To expand the economic potential of forests, the World Bank is encouraging private sector engagement and investment in sustainable forestry and forest-linked industries, including eco-tourism and forest product processing. Strengthening these forest value chains not only empowers local communities but also helps distribute wealth more equitably while protecting ecosystems.

In a world urgently seeking sustainable solutions, forests present a powerful opportunity. When seen not just as natural reserves but as engines of inclusive growth and green employment, forests can help shape a future that is both environmentally and economically resilient.
