The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has issued a grave statement highlighting the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, following the reported deaths of 15 Palestinians—including nine children and four women—who were waiting in line for nutritional aid. This tragedy unfolded in Deir al Balah, a central area in the Gaza Strip, where families had gathered in desperation for essential supplies.

According to UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, an additional 30 civilians were reportedly injured in the same incident, among them 19 children. The organization expressed deep outrage and sorrow over the event, which starkly illustrates the escalating human toll of the conflict in the region.

“This is the cruel reality confronting many in Gaza today,” said Russell. “Months of restricted humanitarian access and the repeated failure of conflict parties to uphold basic responsibilities have left innocent civilians, especially children, vulnerable and unprotected.”

UNICEF is calling on all involved in the conflict to prioritize the protection of civilians, particularly children, and to ensure safe and unimpeded access to humanitarian aid. The organization emphasized that no child should suffer or die while waiting for food and basic necessities.

The broader humanitarian situation in Gaza remains critical. For months, aid agencies have struggled to deliver food, medical supplies, and other essentials due to ongoing hostilities and limited access. International humanitarian law requires all parties in conflict zones to protect civilians and allow relief to reach those in need—conditions that, according to UNICEF, are currently not being met.

As the crisis deepens, UNICEF urges immediate international action to prevent further loss of life and to ensure the safety and dignity of all children caught in the crossfire. The organization reaffirmed its commitment to stand with Gaza’s children and called on the world not to turn away from their suffering.
