Zelenskyy Announces Imminent Prisoner Exchange and New Wave of Sanctions Against Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy delivered an important update today, highlighting key developments in the country’s ongoing efforts to bring back citizens held in Russian captivity and to strengthen international pressure on the Kremlin.
According to Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), discussions are actively underway with the Russian side regarding a potential exchange of 1,200 Ukrainian captives. The group includes both military personnel and civilians, reflecting Ukraine’s unwavering commitment to bring all of its people home, regardless of the complexity of negotiations.
President Zelenskyy emphasized that no one will be left behind, stating: “We must return everyone, no matter how hard it is.”
Andriy Yermak, Head of the Presidential Office, also briefed on ongoing dialogues with international allies, particularly the United States. Zelenskyy expressed deep gratitude for America’s continued support, noting that coordinated international pressure on Russia is essential. “Sanctions and diplomatic pressure must remind Moscow that prolonging this war comes at a real cost,” he remarked.
In addition to these diplomatic efforts, Zelenskyy convened a meeting focused on sanctions policy. He announced that Ukraine has prepared three new sanctions packages, with the first already implemented. This initial wave targets the captains of Russia’s shadow fleet, a network often used to bypass international trade restrictions.
To maximize impact, Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukraine will synchronize its sanctions with those of its allies. Next week, Ukrainian authorities will enact measures mirroring the decisions made by partner nations, ensuring sanctions apply uniformly across jurisdictions.
These actions reflect Ukraine’s dual approach: relentless diplomacy to secure the release of its citizens and sustained economic pressure to hold Russia accountable for its aggression.
