Macron Reaffirms Europe’s Commitment to Lasting Peace in Ukraine at Washington Talks

Washington, D.C., August 19, 2025 — French President Emmanuel Macron emphasized Europe’s determination to secure a lasting peace in Ukraine during high-level discussions in Washington alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking after the summit, Macron underlined that peace must be “solid and durable,” protecting both Ukraine’s sovereignty and Europe’s broader security. He stressed that the path forward requires the creation of robust security guarantees for Ukraine, a process on which European partners and the United States have agreed to work in close coordination.
“The future stability of Ukraine and the safety of Europeans are tied together,” Macron said, highlighting that guarantees must be more than symbolic — they must carry real commitments to defend against renewed aggression.
At the same time, Macron made clear that pressure on Russia will remain in place until genuine peace is achieved. This includes sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and continued support for Ukraine’s military defense. “Our position is clear,” he stated. “Only when peace is established can the pressure on Moscow be lifted.”
The French president’s remarks echoed a broader message from European leaders at the White House meeting: unity with Ukraine remains unwavering, and any settlement must strengthen its independence while deterring future threats.
As negotiations toward peace progress, Macron’s words reinforced the European stance that diplomacy must be backed by strength — and that security guarantees, alongside sustained pressure on Russia, will be the foundation for any lasting resolution to the conflict.
