President Donald Trump has announced the approval of more than $500,000 in federal assistance for the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe in South Dakota, following severe storms and flooding that struck the region in June.

The President confirmed the decision after a phone call with Senate Republican Leader John Thune, emphasizing his commitment to supporting South Dakota communities affected by the disaster. “I am approving over $500,000 for the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe in the Great State of South Dakota for the terrible storms and flooding they endured in June,” Trump said.

Trump praised South Dakotans for their resilience and noted his strong electoral support in the state during past presidential elections. He also reaffirmed his administration’s pledge to provide necessary resources to communities recovering from natural disasters. “I love the people of South Dakota… together, we will make America great again,” he added.

The Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate Tribe, based on the Lake Traverse Reservation in the northeastern part of the state, has faced significant damage from the severe weather, which led to widespread flooding and infrastructure challenges. The federal funds are expected to assist with recovery efforts, including repairs to damaged property, restoration of essential services, and support for displaced families.

Local and tribal leaders have welcomed the assistance, noting that the funding will help address urgent needs while longer-term recovery and resilience planning continues.

The allocation underscores the federal government’s ongoing role in disaster relief and its focus on ensuring that Native American communities receive direct support in times of crisis.
