Zelenskyy Calls for Stronger European Unity on Defense and Security at Political Summit

At the recent European Political Community Summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy underscored the urgent need for deeper unity among European nations in the face of growing geopolitical challenges. Speaking after a series of high-level discussions with European leaders, Zelenskyy emphasized that the only effective response to the continent’s current crises—ranging from Russia’s aggression to broader security and economic instability—is European solidarity and coordinated action.
“Europe faces many challenges today, but there is only one effective response to them all – unity,” Zelenskyy declared, stressing that Europe’s collective defense and shared values must form the foundation of its future decisions.
During the summit, Zelenskyy held multiple bilateral and multilateral meetings focused on strengthening continental security architecture, support for Ukraine, and strategic coordination against Russian aggression. Among the key topics discussed were the PURL initiative, the SAFE instrument providing security guarantees for Ukraine, and the European Union’s new sanctions package targeting Moscow’s war economy.
The Ukrainian leader also called for accelerated efforts to utilize frozen Russian assets to aid in Ukraine’s reconstruction, describing it as both a moral and strategic necessity. “The aggressor must pay for the destruction it has caused,” he noted, adding that Europe’s financial and legal frameworks must evolve to make such accountability possible.
Another major theme of the summit was the European future of Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans. Zelenskyy reaffirmed his government’s determination to continue reforms aimed at aligning Ukraine with European Union standards, while urging EU leaders to maintain momentum on enlargement. “Ukraine, Moldova, and the Western Balkans belong to the European family. Their integration is not only a matter of policy—it is a matter of security and stability for the entire continent,” he said.
Zelenskyy’s appeal for unity also extended to joint defense initiatives and cross-border cooperation on energy, cyber resilience, and infrastructure protection. With security threats evolving rapidly—from hybrid warfare to disinformation campaigns—he warned that no single nation can protect itself alone. “Europe must be protected from any threats. Only joint action and combined efforts can guarantee real security,” he stressed.
The summit also provided a platform for Ukraine to deepen bilateral partnerships with several European states. Discussions covered defense cooperation, post-war recovery projects, and infrastructure modernization—key elements of Ukraine’s resilience and future integration into European frameworks such as NATO and the EU Single Market.
European leaders reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence, while expressing consensus on maintaining pressure on Russia through sanctions and diplomatic isolation. Early reports from the summit indicate that the upcoming sanctions package will be among the most comprehensive yet, targeting sectors critical to Russia’s war financing.
As the war in Ukraine nears its third year, Zelenskyy’s message was clear: Europe’s strength lies in its unity. “I am grateful to everyone who understands this and is ready to work in this way,” he concluded, calling on Europe to transform solidarity into tangible policies that secure peace, freedom, and stability across the continent.
For Ukraine and Europe alike, the path forward depends on cooperation, resilience, and the collective determination to defend shared values in the face of adversity.
