Senator Marco Rubio Praises President Abinader for Leadership and Cooperation on Summit of the Americas Postponement
In a message reflecting strong regional cooperation, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio expressed the gratitude of the United States to Dominican Republic President Luis Abinader for his leadership, friendship, and decision to postpone the Summit of the Americas to 2026. Rubio emphasized that the United States stands fully behind this decision, viewing it as an opportunity to ensure a more productive, strategic, and impactful summit in the near future.
“On behalf of the United States, we are grateful to President Abinader for his friendship and his willingness to host the Summit of the Americas,” Rubio said. “We fully support the decision to postpone the summit and will continue to work closely with the Dominican Republic and other countries in the region to plan a successful event in 2026.”
The Summit of the Americas, a key diplomatic forum bringing together leaders from across the Western Hemisphere, aims to strengthen cooperation on democracy, trade, security, and sustainable development. Senator Rubio noted that the additional preparation time will allow for deeper coordination among partner nations, ensuring that the 2026 summit effectively addresses shared priorities such as regional security, economic resilience, and citizen well-being.
Rubio, who serves as Vice Chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and has long been an influential voice on Latin American policy, underscored the importance of strong U.S.–Latin American partnerships in advancing mutual goals.
