India and Nepal Strengthen Rail Trade Links: New Agreement Expands Transit Connectivity
New Delhi, November 13, 2025 — In a significant move to enhance regional trade and connectivity, India and Nepal have signed a Letter of Exchange (LoE) aimed at expanding the list of transit routes and strengthening bilateral railway linkages. The agreement is expected to give a major boost to cross-border trade, streamline logistics, and deepen economic cooperation between the two neighboring nations.
The LoE was signed during a high-level meeting between officials from both countries, marking another milestone in India–Nepal relations. The agreement focuses on improving rail-based trade connectivity, facilitating faster movement of goods, and reducing transportation costs for businesses operating across the shared border.
Enhancing Regional Trade Corridors
Under the newly signed LoE, both sides agreed to extend and modernize existing rail transit routes while identifying potential new corridors for the movement of cargo. This expansion is part of a broader effort to make cross-border trade more efficient and sustainable by leveraging India’s extensive railway network.
Officials noted that the improved connectivity would particularly benefit landlocked Nepal by providing seamless access to Indian ports, thus enhancing its export competitiveness and economic resilience.
Boosting Infrastructure and Check Post Development
The meeting also reviewed ongoing bilateral initiatives to strengthen border infrastructure, including the development of Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) at key transit points. These ICPs are designed to integrate customs, immigration, and security facilities under one roof, ensuring smoother and faster processing of goods and passengers.
Both nations expressed satisfaction over the progress of various connectivity projects — including cross-border pipelines, power transmission lines, and road networks — that aim to transform India–Nepal cooperation into a model of regional partnership.
Deepening Bilateral Economic Ties
India remains Nepal’s largest trading partner and one of its key development allies. The new LoE builds upon existing agreements such as the India–Nepal Treaty of Transit and Rail Services Agreement, reaffirming the shared goal of fostering sustainable trade, investment, and mobility between the two countries.
Diplomatic sources emphasized that the enhanced connectivity framework will not only support trade but also promote people-to-people contact, tourism, and regional integration under the larger vision of South Asian economic growth.

With the signing of this latest agreement, India and Nepal have taken a decisive step toward creating a more integrated, connected, and prosperous neighborhood.
