Youth Activists Urge Stronger Safeguards Against E-Cigarettes and Nicotine Products

HIT AND HOT NEWS | 21 November 2025
Youth-led voices took center stage at the ongoing global health discussions as young activists raised concerns about the rising influence of e-cigarettes, vapes, and nicotine pouches among children and teenagers. Their message was amplified by WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who praised their determination and advocacy.
The activists—representing groups such as the Global Youth Voices Movement (GYV) and The Global Center for Good Governance in Tobacco Control (GGTC)—highlighted how companies producing these nicotine-based products are increasingly targeting younger populations for profit. They expressed deep worry that early exposure to such products can lead to addiction and eventually transition into the use of traditional tobacco.
Dr. Ghebreyesus, speaking from the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) COP11 platform, emphasized that the concerns raised by youth leaders reflect a growing global challenge. According to him, their activism is crucial in ensuring that governments adopt stronger policies to safeguard children from harmful substances.
Marking World Children’s Day, Dr. Ghebreyesus urged young people everywhere to continue raising their voices and advocating for stricter protection measures. He encouraged governments to take decisive action to shield minors from the aggressive marketing tactics used by companies manufacturing nicotine products.
The message delivered at COP11 adds momentum to the broader public health movement seeking to curb youth addiction and build stronger frameworks for preventive health worldwide.
