Kim Jong Un Visits China Border Region, Showcases Massive Greenhouse Project in Flood-Hit Sinuiju

Pyongyang | International Affairs Desk
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has begun the year 2026 with a high-profile visit to Sinuiju, a strategic city located near the China–North Korea border, signaling renewed focus on agricultural revival and political consolidation ahead of key party events.
Arriving in his signature armored train, Kim was welcomed by large crowds comprising soldiers, young volunteers, and local residents. State media portrayed the visit as both a morale-boosting gesture and a demonstration of leadership during a critical phase of national reconstruction.
From Disaster Zone to Agricultural Hub
The Sinuiju region had suffered extensive destruction during the catastrophic floods of 2024, which severely damaged farmland and infrastructure along the border areas. In response, the North Korean leadership announced an ambitious redevelopment plan aimed at transforming the devastated zone into a modern agricultural center.
At the heart of this effort is the Sinuiju Combined Greenhouse Farm, a sprawling project covering more than 1,100 acres (approximately 450 hectares). According to official sources, the facility is now nearing completion and is expected to become one of the largest controlled-environment farming complexes in the country.
Addressing military personnel and youth construction brigades at the site, Kim praised their contribution, stating that the project symbolizes the country’s ability to overcome natural disasters through discipline and collective effort.
Strategic Timing Ahead of Party Congress
Observers note that the visit carries significant political weight. North Korea is preparing for the ninth congress of the ruling Workers’ Party, a major event expected to outline future economic and strategic priorities. In the months leading up to the congress, Kim Jong Un has intensified inspections of military units, industrial facilities, and key development projects.
The Sinuiju greenhouse initiative is being highlighted as a flagship example of post-disaster recovery and self-reliant economic planning—core themes likely to feature prominently at the upcoming party meeting.
Focus on Food Security and Self-Reliance
Once operational, the greenhouse complex is expected to supply fresh vegetables year-round to border regions, reducing seasonal shortages and dependence on external factors. North Korean authorities have framed the project as a major step toward strengthening national food security and reinforcing the state’s long-standing emphasis on economic self-sufficiency.
Analysts believe the project also carries symbolic importance, showcasing resilience and centralized planning in a region of geopolitical sensitivity near the Chinese border.
As North Korea moves closer to its next major political milestone, developments in Sinuiju underscore how reconstruction, agriculture, and political messaging are being closely intertwined under Kim Jong Un’s leadership.
