Centre and Tamil Nadu Review Progress of PM MITRA Textile Park in Virudhunagar

A high-level review meeting was held in Chennai to evaluate the progress of the upcoming textile manufacturing hub being developed under the PM MITRA initiative. Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary of the Ministry of Textiles (India), met with the Chief Secretary of the Government of Tamil Nadu to assess the status of the PM MITRA Park project planned for Virudhunagar.
The discussions primarily focused on accelerating the development of essential infrastructure and ensuring that land allotment processes move forward without delays. Officials also emphasized the importance of attracting investment to help the project become operational at the earliest. Once completed, the park is expected to transform Virudhunagar into a major integrated center for textile production.
The project is part of the PM MITRA Scheme (Pradhan Mantri Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel Scheme), which aims to build world-class textile manufacturing zones across India. These parks are designed to integrate the entire textile value chain—from raw material processing to finished apparel production—within a single industrial ecosystem.
During the meeting, Secretary Neelam Shami Rao also briefed state officials about upcoming initiatives for the textile sector announced in the Union Budget 2026–27 (India). She explained that several policy measures and schemes are currently being formulated to strengthen the textile industry, attract fresh investments, and enhance global competitiveness.
The planned initiatives are expected to support the entire textile value chain while encouraging innovation and modern production methods. Additionally, they aim to generate significant employment opportunities, particularly in manufacturing and allied sectors.
The central government also sought active cooperation from the Tamil Nadu administration to ensure smooth implementation of the project. Officials requested the state government to provide inputs and support wherever required to facilitate faster development of the textile park.
Once operational, the PM MITRA Park in Virudhunagar is expected to play a crucial role in boosting textile exports, improving supply chain efficiency, and positioning India as a stronger global hub for textile manufacturing.
