Political Row Intensifies Over Detention of Sonam Wangchuk

A fresh political controversy has erupted in India after opposition leaders accused the central government of reversing its position regarding the detention of Ladakh-based activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk. The issue has triggered sharp criticism from the Indian National Congress, which claims the arrest was unjustified and politically motivated.
Six months ago, the Congress party had strongly condemned the detention of Wangchuk, describing the action as being based on “baseless” or “bogus” allegations. According to party leaders, the central government’s current stance represents a complete reversal of its earlier position and raises questions about the motives behind the legal action taken against the activist.
Sonam Wangchuk is widely known for his work as an engineer, innovator, and education reform advocate. He has also been actively involved in social and environmental campaigns in the Union Territory of Ladakh, particularly on issues related to ecological protection, local governance, and the preservation of the region’s fragile Himalayan environment.
Leaders from the Indian National Congress have demanded that the government issue a formal apology to Wangchuk and his family, arguing that the activist’s detention undermines democratic rights and freedom of expression. The party also said the apology should extend to the residents of Ladakh, where protests and demonstrations have taken place in response to the incident.
Opposition figures have further called on the central government led by Narendra Modi to immediately release individuals who were detained while participating in what they described as peaceful and democratic protests. According to them, citizens should not face legal consequences for exercising their constitutional right to protest.
The controversy has sparked wider discussions about civil liberties and the role of activism in shaping public policy, especially in remote regions such as Ladakh. Supporters of Wangchuk argue that his campaigns focus on environmental protection and sustainable development, issues that are increasingly important as climate change affects fragile mountain ecosystems.
Meanwhile, the government has not issued a detailed response to the opposition’s allegations, though officials have previously stated that actions taken by law enforcement agencies are based on legal procedures and security considerations.
As the debate continues, political observers say the issue could further intensify tensions between the ruling government and opposition parties. The situation also highlights the broader challenge of balancing law enforcement, public activism, and democratic freedoms in India’s evolving political landscape.
