UN Human Rights Council Marks 20 Years Since Its Creation

Twenty years ago, on March 15, 2006, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a landmark resolution establishing the United Nations Human Rights Council. Headquartered in Geneva, the council was created to strengthen the global system for protecting and promoting human rights.

The formation of the Human Rights Council represented a major step in reforming the United Nations’ approach to addressing human rights issues worldwide. It replaced the former United Nations Commission on Human Rights with the goal of creating a more effective and accountable international body.
